Mexico - Temples and beaches
[./map_page.html]
The end of the day we arrived in Chichen Itza, one of the best renovated Mayan sites. We spent the following day walking the temples, ruines, walkways, ball courts and other social places that were used more than a thousand years ago by the ancient Mayas. This was obviously dream country for Grandpa and Kate, but the children loved the place too. Kate had managed to get her hands on a number of books about the Maya for children which were very helpful in bringing the place alive. These books came in very handy too when the following week "Die Welt der Maya" was on the school agenda!

It does not only look it, it really is steep!!
... and this warning sign could not stop our eager climbers either!
The powerful Jaguar!
The Maya believed in gods living in the sky and demons living underground. Most of the water in Yucatan flows underground and can be seen in ‘Cenotes’, holes in the ground measuring 15-20 meter in diameter. These are the places that were used as well for human sacrifices to appease the gods. Not far from our hotel was one of those Cenotes where it was actually possible to go for a swim. Grandma and kids had great fun jumping and diving into the water! 뾾쇀쏂엄Æ
We drove then onwards to the Caribean coast to Akumal, a small resort place one hundred kilometers away from Cancun and therefore somewhat spared by the worst of the hurricane. Here we enjoyed our first holiday outside the camper!! 쟆질Ê
Amazing this underwatersand!!
When we arrived Cléo did not want to touch the water of fear of ‘nasty’ animals in the water - with Grandma’s coaching by the end of the holiday Cléo did not want to leave the water any more. It has to be said that the underwaterworld just 50 meters of the beach was amazing!
